Liquid Crystal - Chromatic EP - 06-Oct-08 04:23 PM
I can't believe that this release has not been commented on yet!!!
One of the greatest hardcore records ever released! Some of the most uplifting synth lines and vocals ever pressed to vinyl!!! Can be a bit stresfull to mix into into a live setting but is well worth the extra effort!
The high pitched vocals and increasingly manic beats are absolutely subliminal on this release (and I wouldn't say that for many!)! One of the most representative, although most under-appreciated and under-rated, cuts of the era!
Worth any price!!!!
Friction & Spice - You Make Me Feel So Good - 23-Sep-08 03:51 PM
As heard on the legendary DJ John Kelley's Funkydesertbreaks 2, this track absolutely epitomizes the late 1990s desert rave scene of California! Some incredibly deep and meaningful breaks, thrown down across a scorching house beat with acid influence... This music is meant to be listened to with a full moon on the horizon as the beat controls your body! Or as the desert sun rises and the cars start to migrate home! Can still blow a dance floor off its hinges today! A+++ record and amazingly ethereal!!!!
DJ Mujava - Township Funk - 21-Sep-08 03:27 PM
Amazingly, I was unable to purchase this record at all while in South Africa for 2 months (although I had heard of and witnessed the devastation that it was causing on local dance floors!!) On the way back to Europe, I chanced upon the whitelabel in an Amsterdam record shop, and picked it up in a heartbeat!
This track has an absolutely incredible ghetto-styled kwaito beat going, with gripping and punishing warbling 303-type lines that hold your focus and spawn energy where it previously was left behind.
The remix adds an "ahhh" type of bassline to the original which, unfortunately, drives out some of the roughness that makes Mujava's original cut so great.
I have been to the townships of South Africa and can definitely agree that this is certified "Township Funk". This record will definitely completely destroy clubs around the world this fall, and I hope it brings a bit of township optimism, energy, and spirit to the world dance scene (as well as a bit of dough to DJ Mujava's pockets!). Mujava! One Love!!!
Inverto - Time To Jack - 21-Sep-08 03:11 PM
One of the best house records to come out recently, and arguably quite under appreciated. "Time To Jack" is good, but not amazing, although it definitely succeeds in building some energy along with some weirdness in the breakdown, as well as some serious Chicago style headthumping bass to pull back into the mains.
But the gems on this slab of wax are are both mixes of the incredibly uplifting "Lean To", which incorporate classic Italo-disco stylings with modern production techniques and incredible syncopating drums. A timeless track, for 100%!!! This will bring the crowd alive and then to their knees!!!
Terrorize - It's Just A Feeling - 09-Jul-08 10:18 AM
Track A1 is a surprisingly banging and very uplifting house remix of this track! Some excellent synth lines, far different from the released version of this, combined with a typical house beat of the 1992/93 era.
A2 is the orginal mix, so it does not need much description. A severely banging tune in its own right!
B1 is very different. More in an early trance vein. It has much added piano, completely re-worked synth lines, and is incredibly driving. A lot of arpeggiation of the themes from the original mix, combined with some 303 acidic goodness. Definitely as uplifting as the other two mixes, with a quite epic quality. This mix definitely would have fit into one of John Kelley's "Funky Desert Breaks" mix sets, I think!
All in all, an incredible record, as all 3 mixes are amazing! Good luck in your search!!!
